Artist's Statement The Creation of a painting, whether it's a portrait, a floral arrangement, or a landscape is a process of magic and balance. I try to present an impression of the subject that includes two opposites: a mysterious quality of enchantment and a state of harmony and proportion.
The beginning of a painting starts from within. I see something that has a story to tell or a personal quality that seeks to emerge. From here I daydream about the painting. Which colors should I use? What should be emphasized and what will I leave to the imagination? What should be left undecided and guided by the creation? Finally, I stare at the blank piece of watercolor paper trying to find the starting point. Often the starting point is a small object like an earring, perhaps glasses or a hat. While faces are givens, people select their glasses or hat based on who they are. These objects reveal the personality to the viewer. I find myself saying, "If I can paint that object then the person will emerge." And then I let the magic begin.
My work continues to develop with each painting. Colors are used in different ways that challenge me and the viewer. Areas are left unpainted so the viewer can create their own feeling of enchantment. Looking for ways to portray a personality with the magic of color and the balance of aesthetics is my exploration.
